CFL’s Edmonton Football Team Names Former Viper OC Elizondo As Head Coach

Now that the NFL season is basically over, we are now seeing coaching changes as teams prepare for the next NFL season and for the upcoming return of the CFL. Former Tampa Bay Vipers offensive coordinator Jaime Elizondo has been named as the new head coach of the CFL’s Edmonton Football Team.

A week after Edmonton head coach Scott Milanovich resigned to become an assistant coach with the Indianapolis Colts, the team announced the signing of Elizondo. Along with his head coaching duties, Elizondo has also been named the team’s offensive coordinator and quarterback coach.

Milanovich didn’t get a chance to call a single game in the CFL due to COVID-19 cancelling the entire 2020 season.

Before the XFL season in 2019, Edmonton tried to lure Elizondo away from the Vipers for its head coaching gig but was denied by the XFL. Elizondo was the offensive coordinator for the Ottawa Redblack for the three-season before leaving for the XFL. The Redblacks won the Grey Cup in 2016.

In 2008 Elizondo was the receivers coach and special teams assistant in Montreal with the Alouettes with then-head coach Marc Trestman. Trestman brought Elizondo to the XFL with him.
